Top seed Fan Zhendong of China eased into the quarter-finals of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Hungarian Open as he comfortably beat Kirill Gerassimenko of Kazakhstan in Budapest.

The 20-year-old World Championships silver medallist continued his commanding start to the tournament with a 12-10, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 win at the Budapest Olympic Hall in this event that is part of the ITTF World Tour.

His opponent in the last eight is due to be Sweden's Kristian Karlsson after he swept aside Portuguese qualifier Tiago Apolonia in straight games.

Karlsson was in ruthless form as he dispatched his opponent 11-7, 12-10, 11-8, 11-9 to join the Chinese player in the quarter-finals.

Fan's compatriot Liu Dingshuo also progressed as he battle to a seven-game victory in a thrilling round of 16 contest with fellow Chinese player Xu Chenhao.

Liu won the opening three games but took his foot off the gas, allowing Xu a way back into the match.

Xu duly levelled at 3-3 to send the encounter into a decider.

Despite losing his momentum, Liu recovered to clinch a 11-3, 11-8, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10 success.

Liu's reward is a quarter-final meeting with Denmark's Jonathan Groth, who overcame Ruwen Filus of Germany 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 11-2, 11-9.

Women's top seed Chen Meng had earlier booked her quarter-final place with a six-game victory against team-mate He Zhoujia.

Chen, a double World Championships team gold medallist, eventually got the better of her compatriot with an 11-8, 10-12, 11-12, 4-11, 11-3, 11-2 win.

She will have to get through another all-Chinese affair if she is to prolong her stay at the tournament in the Hungarian capital as Wang Manyu, a 11-3, 11-1, 11-8, 11-9 winner over Romania's Bernadette Szocs, awaits in the last eight.
