The World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup event in Veysonnaz has had to be cancelled for the second consecutive day due to bad weather.

Despite stating yesterday that they were optimistic that racing would take place today, World Para Alpine Skiing were forced to cancel the competition in the Swiss venue due to high winds and heavy snow.

Race director Ali Bombardier said: "The wind at 7.30am was very strong and the gusts were more than 80 kilometres an hour, meaning the gondola was not able to operate.

"The forecast is for increasing winds today and dropping tonight.

"There is also 20 centimetres of fresh snow that would need to be removed - slipped or shovelled off the course to make it safe.

"Visibility due to the combination of wind and snow was low and another factor in the decision to cancel.

"All decisions are based on the safety for the athletes and looking to provide a fair playing field.

"Neither could be provided today.

"We are planning to race the slalom events tomorrow and we will have a team captain's meeting to prepare for the race.

"The decision will be made tomorrow morning."

The first day of racing in Veysonnaz was dramatic with Norway's Jesper Pedersen and Sochi 2014 gold medallist Marie Bochet of France among the headline winners.

If it goes ahead, tomorrow will be the last day of the event.
