The Netherlands’ Jeroen Kampschreur will be aiming to achieve his first win of the 2017-2018 World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup season when he competes in Veysonnaz in Switzerland this week.

Kampschreur, who won three gold medals at the 2017 World Championships in Tarvisio in Italy, will be contesting the two giant slalom and two slalom events over the coming four days.

Among his expected challengers is Norway’s Jesper Pedersen, who is enjoying the best season of his career having secured five wins so far.

Japan’s Akira Kano, a double gold medallist at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games, will be another athlete to look out for.

The equivalent women’s event will see Germany’s Anna Schaffelhuber, who won five gold medals at Sochi 2014, return to the slopes.

Schaffelhuber did not compete in Croatia’s capital Zagreb and Slovenian town Kranjska Gora earlier this month.

She will face Austrian arch-rival Claudia Loesch, who is leading the overall standings after claiming five World Cup victories.

Russia’s Aleksei Bugaev, who will be competing as a neutral athlete following the International Paralympic Committee's decision to suspend the Russian Paralympic Committee for doping offences, is hoping to add a sixth victory to his haul in the men’s standing.

The double Sochi 2014 gold medallist’s strongest opponents are likely to be Austria’s Markus Salcher, also a double Sochi 2014 gold medallist, and France’s Arthur Bauchet, a winner of two titles at the 2017 World Championships.

France’s Marie Bochet, who has claimed seven wins so far this season, is taking a break from competing and will not participate in the women’s standing in Veysonnaz.

It will provide an opportunity for her rivals to reach the top of the podium with Germany’s Andrea Rothfuss, the Sochi 2014 gold medallist, expected to be the main candidate.

In the women’s visually impaired, Slovakia’s Henrieta Farkašová is considered a strong contender to achieve several wins.

The multiple-Paralympic and world champion has already sealed six wins this season.

Great Britain’s Millie Knight and Kelly Gallagher are among those seeking to prevent Farkašová from adding another victory to her tally.

Paralympic and world gold medallist Mac Marcoux of Canada will be one of the leading athletes in the men’s visually impaired.

Other big names competing will be four-time Paralympic champion Jakub Krako of Slovakia and world champion Giacomo Bertagnolli of Italy.

The World Cup in Veysonnaz will feature up to 114 skiers from 23 countries.

Action is due to conclude on Thursday (January 18).
