In a statement, the SSA said the decision had been made in order to allow Schooling to focus on the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.

Schooling, who claimed his country's first Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, is among three swimmers from the nation to have been ruled out by the SSA.

The governing body also confirmed Quah Zheng Wen, a multiple Southeast Asian Games champion, and his younger sister Quah Jing Wen, would not participate at the Games in Gold Coast.

"This will allow me to concentrate fully on the Asian Games and ensure that I put in my best performances for Singapore in Jakarta," Schooling said in the SSA statement.

Stephan Widmer, Singapore's performance director and national head coach, claimed he supported the decision of the SSA.

The SSA believe they have more chance of success at Jakarta Palembang 2018, due to run from August 18 to September 2, than at Gold Coast 2018.

"After consultation with the athletes and their coaches, I am supportive of the decision to not nominate the three swimmers for the Commonwealth Games," Widmer said.

"This decision will ultimately benefit Singapore, as we look to achieve our aims of challenging for medals in Jakarta, and closing the gap on the rest of Asia.

"To be competitive with the stronger Asian nations, we need these three high performers to be at their absolute peak. 

"That's crucial for Singapore to be in team relay medal contention at these Games."

Schooling won silver in the 100m butterfly at Glasgow 2014 and would have been one of Singapore's main medal hopes at the Commonwealth Games.
