Canada triumphed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship by overcoming Sweden 3-1 in the final in Buffalo.

The two teams played out a goalless opening period at the KeyBank Center, which saw an attendance of 17,544 fans.

Canada’s Dillon Dube opened the scoring in the second period of the final, putting Sweden's hopes of winning the tournament with an unbeaten record at risk.

They responded in impressive fashion with Tim Soderlund finding the net to pull them level heading into the final part of normal time.

Tyler Steenbergen put Canada back in front in the closing stages of the match, giving Sweden just over one minute to get back on level terms.

Sweden were unable to force overtime, with Canada’s victory being sealed by another late strike from Alex Formenton.

"I just about blacked out when it happened," said Steenbergen.

"I'm at a loss for words.

"And to win it for all the crowd that came out for us was pretty special."

The victory saw Canada claim the title for the first time since 2015.

Last year's winners, the United States, were able to secure the bronze medal after beating the Czech Republic.

The hosts stormed into a 7-0 advantage after two periods of the match with Trent Frederic starring by scoring a hat-trick.

The Czech Republic outscored their opponents 3-2 in the final period, but it proved far too late to have any impact on the match, with the US winning 9-3.

The women's tournament is due to start tomorrow in Russia.
