Kamil Stoch achieved a hat-trick of victories at this year’s Four Hills Tournament to move closer to the successful defence of the title he earned last year.

The Polish ski jumper had already triumphed at the first two events at Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, both in Germany.

He finished second in qualification in Innsbruck yesterday, the first of two Austria competitions.

Jumps of 130 and 128.5 metres in today’s final proved enough to place him at the top of the standings on 270.1 points.

He could become only the second man to win all four of the events when the final competition is due to take place on Saturday (January 6) in Bischofshofen.

Germany’s Sven Hannawald is the only man to achieve the feat to date, having done so back in 2002.

Janne Ahonen was the last jumper to win the opening three events of the tournament, the Finnish athlete dominating the 2005 event.

Having won the final event of last year’s tournament, Stoch could equal the record of five straight wins managed by Germany’s Helmut Recknagel and Hannawald.

Norway’s Daniel Andre Tande, the last man to win a Four Hills event before Stoch, ended as the runner-up today.

He managed jumps of 129.5m and 125m to finish on 255.6 points.

The podium was completed by Andreas Wellinger of Germany with 253.5 points.

There was disappointment for Richard Freitag, who began the day second in the overall standings.

The German fell during his first jump of the competition and was unable to compete in the second round.
