Centurion Club in St Albans will host the second edition of the GolfSixes tournament, the European Tour has confirmed after claiming last year's event attracted new and younger fans to the game.

The club in the English city staged the inaugural competition in May 2017 and analysis from the European Tour has outlined the benefits of the format.

The study claimed the event saw a 42 per cent increase in new golf fans  compared to standard European Tour tournaments.

It also revealed they were 14 per cent younger than those seen during the rest of the golfing calendar.

The analysis came as the governing body confirmed GolfSixes is due toreturn on May 5 and 6 following the success of the inaugural competition.

Feedback after the first event, won by Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen and Lucas Bjerregaard, was largely positive.

England Golf chief executive Nick Pink said he was encouraged by the response, claiming the only negative cited was that it was "too razzmatazz".

It was launched part of golf's efforts to appeal to a wider audience with entrance music and pyrotechnics featured at the competition.

The format featured 16 teams of two players who first contested a group stage before knock-out rounds.

Each match took place over just six holes using the greensomes format - where both players tee-off before the players alternate using the best lying ball.

One point is awarded for each hole won.

The winner of the match is the team with the most points after six holes.

"Golf needs a route for younger fans, groups of adults and families to get involved," European Tour chief commercial and marketing officer Nathan Homer said.

"We know that GolfSixes appeals to those audiences while still offering something to our die-hard fans.

"We have to keep innovating in order to grow our appeal and the statistics suggest GolfSixes can have a powerful presence in the golfing calendar.

"GolfSixes is still in the early stages of its development but the combination of player feedback and tournament data suggests it is here to stay.

"Innovation is vital for golf to continue to grow its fan base and we look forward to seeing how the next iteration of GolfSixes will support that goal."
