Becca and Matt Hamilton defeated Cory Christensen and John Shuster 6-5 in the American Olympic team trials for mixed doubles curling in Blaine and will now take part in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang next year.

The siblings' win means they will be the first athletes to compete in both the team and mixed doubles curling at an Olympic Games.

The duo were named in the men's and women's squads for the team curling events last month and will now have the chance to take home two medals in South Korea.

Mixed doubles curling will make its Olympic debut in Pyeongchang.

The opening end of their trials final saw them lock in a stone on the button, although they were not able to add to the total.

In the second end, Matt Hamilton converted a double take-out to force Christensen into a take-out attempt with the final stone, which was unsuccessful.

At 2-0 up in the third end, the Hamiltons played a run-back that allowed room for Christensen to draw for two.

The final rock, however, made light contact with a centre guard and they settled for a single instead.

Becca Hamilton drew into the four-foot with the final stone of the fourth end to take a 3-1 lead into half-time.

Christensen and Shuster managed to come back into the match at the start of the second half.

A series of half shots from the Hamiltons allowed Christensen to make a take-out and score three points in the fifth, giving them the lead for the first time.

The Hamiltons put their power play to use in the sixth to secure two points when Becca Hamilton converted an open takeout before she played a perfect draw with the first stone of the seventh end to place it on the button.

Christensen was then heavy with her team's first rock and they never regained position, allowing the Hamiltons to steal a point and take a two-stone lead into the eighth end.

However, Christensen then missed a golden opportunity to win the match in the eighth.

Several half shots not only gave Christensen the chance to score two and force an extra end, but the opportunity to score three and take the match.

It came when Becca Hamilton's final stone went wide, giving Christensen a relatively open hit and stick to seal the victory.

Unfortunately for Christensen, her stone curled too much at the end and did not remove enough of the Hamiltons' stone, giving the Hamiltons a victory and a spot on the Olympic team.

After the victory, Matt Hamilton said: "This is something you dream about your entire life.

"To be able to come out on top in two separate events is a Christmas miracle and we're really excited.

"I don't even think the first win has fully set in.

"Maybe when I get on the plane and head over there it'll set in.

"To put this on top of it is unreal.

"I just know I have the best little sister in the world and the best little curler in the world."
