Overall leader Richard Freitag won for the third time on the International Ski Federation Ski Jumping World Cup circuit this season with victory in Engelberg.

The 26-year-old German improved on his second place on the Swiss hill yesterday when he finished behind Norway's Anders Fannemel.

He registered jumps of 137.5 metres and 135m to score 286.4 points and top the pile.

It means he has extended his overall World Cup lead going into the Christmas break, with the next action on the calendar the prestigious Four Hills Tournament.

"After the second place yesterday I was looking forward to this competition," said Freitag, who also won in Nizhny Tagil and Titisee-Neustadt this term.

"Today it was easier for everyone, the conditions were a lot better and it wasn't snowing.

"I already had a good start in the qualification, my first jump today was good and the second one was amazing.

"It's nice that it's going well for our entire team and we can enjoy it together.

"I'm optimistic for the Four Hills Tournament, the team spirit helps us."

Poland's double Olympic gold medallist Kamil Stoch claimed silver today, jumping 137m and 133m for 274.8 points.

Austrian Stefan Kraft, the overall defending World Cup champion, won bronze after efforts of 137m and 134.5m gave him a tally of 274.7.

Freitag has 550 points on top of the World Cup leaderboard, with his compatriot Andreas Wellinger second on 399.

Daniel-Andre Tande of Norway is third on 356.

In women's World Cup action there was a second win of the season for Norway's Maren Lundby in Hinterzarten in Germany.

The 23-year-old won the season-opener in Lillehammer but German Katharina Althaus has won both events since then.

Lundby, who set a hill record of 109m as Norway finished seventh in the team event yesterday, managed 105m and 102m today to win on 269.1 points.

It meant Althaus had to settle for silver on home snow, jumping 102.5m and 99m and ending on 254.7.

Japan's reigning overall champion Sara Takanashi won bronze for the third World Cup in a row, scoring 248.8 points with jumps of 98m and 100m.

"It was a really good competition today," said Lundby.

"I was nervous since the morning and didn't talk to anyone.

"My shape is really good and it is something special to beat Katharina in Germany."

Lundby has also moved level at the top of the World Cup leaderboard with Althaus, as both jumpers have 360 points.

Takanashi is third on 220.

The men's season will resume in Oberstdorf in Germany on December 30, the first of the Four Hills competitions.

The women will not be in action until January 6 when Râșnov in Romania will play host.
