China's Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng were crowned the respective men's and women's singles champions at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour Grand Finals after both came through their gold medal matches in Astana today.

Fan proved too strong for Germany's Dimitrij Ovtcharov, who will become the new world number one on January 1, and registered an 11-7, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10 win at the Kazakh capital's Daulet Sports Complex.

It secured his first triumph at the event and avenged his defeat to Ovtcharov when the pair met in the semi-finals of last month's ITTF World Tour German Open.

"I'm very happy with my victory having played well in the final against Ovtcharov," Fan, who had lost the last two years' finals, said.

"I lost the last time we played at the German Open, so I'm really happy to win against him this time round.

"After losing in the finals the last two years, I was determined to win this trophy.

"So I am very satisfied to finish the year on this high."

The women’s singles final saw Chen beat doubles partner Zhu Yuling 11-6, 11-3, 11-6, 12-10 to add the coveted title to the three Platinum World Tour crowns she has won this year.

It had already been confirmed prior to today's match that world number two Chen will replace Zhu as world number one on January 1, when the new ranking system comes into effect.

"Actually, I was prepared to play the full seven games against Yuling," Meng said.

"We have faced each other previously this year, and even though I won that match too, it wasn't an easy win.

"So today I came fully prepared and there's probably also some luck involved here."

Chen and Zhu joined forces to win the women’s doubles final 11-8, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 at the expense of Japanese top seeds Hina Hayata and Mima Ito.

The men's doubles final saw Masataka Morizono and Yuya Oshima defeat Hong Kong's Ho Kwan Kit and Wong Chun Ting 11-7, 6-11, 6-11, 12-10, 9-11, 12-10, 12-10.

Morizono and Oshima, the 2015 winners and last year’s runners-up, saved four match points before winning the dramatic seven-game contest.

The 2018 ITTF World Tour is due to begin on January 18, when the Hungarian Open is scheduled to get underway in Budapest.
