The Netherlands broke the mixed 4x50 metres freestyle relay world record as action continued today at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Copenhagen.

Nyls Korstanje, Kyle Stolk, Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Femke Heemskerk combined to clock a time of 1min 28.39sec in the final at the Royal Arena in the Danish capital.

The time bettered the previous mark of 1:28.57 posted by the United States in 2014.

It is the second world record set by The Netherlands in as many days with the mark in the women’s 4x50m freestyle falling yesterday. 

The silver medal went to the Russian quartet of Vladimir Morozov, Sergei Fesikov, Maria Kameneva and Rozaliya Nasretdinova in 1:28.53.

The bronze medal went to Italy’s Luca Dotto, Marco Orsi, Federica Pellegrini and Erika Ferraioli in 1:29.38.

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú added a further two gold medals to her tally today with her first coming in the women’s 200m individual medley.

The 28-year-old won with a time of 2:04.43, while team-mate Evelyn Verrasztó earning the silver medal in 2:08.09.

Italy’s Ilaria Cusinato rounded out the podium in 2:08.19.

Hosszú’s second gold medal came in the women’s 50m backstroke with a time of 25.95.

Poland’s Alicja Tchórz was a close second in 26.09, while The Netherlands’ Maaike de Waard finished third in 26.40.  

The men’s 100m breaststroke final saw Great Britain’s Adam Peaty break the European record with a time of 55.94.

It bettered Russian Kirill Prigoda‘s previous mark of 56.02, but fell just short of South African Cameron van der Burgh’s world record of 55.61.

Prigoda won the bronze medal in 56.28, while Italy’s Fabio Scozzoli was the runner-up in 56.15.

Italy’s Nicolò Martinenghi set a world junior record in the event after finishing seventh with a time of 57.27.

It was an improvement on the 57.60 he set during yesterday’s semi-finals.

Among today’s other winners was Lithuania’s Rūta Meilutytė, who earned the gold medal in the women’s 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:03.79.

It was just enough to edge Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen, who touched home in 1:04.25.

The bronze medal went to Spain’s Jessica Vall in 1:04.80.

There were also triumphs today for France’s Charlotte Bonnet in the women’s 200m freestyle and Russia’s Aleksandr Popkov in the men’s 50m butterfly.

Bonnet topped her podium with a time of 1:52.19, while Dutchwoman Heemskerk finished second in 1:53.41 and Russia’s Veronika Andrusenko came third in 1:53.75.

Popkov won his extremely tight final in 22.42, beating nearest challenger Andriy Govorov of Ukraine by just 0.01 seconds.

Serbia’s Sebastian Sabo and Britain’s Benjamin Proud were tied for third place after both clocked 22.44.
