Gregory Gaultier, right, came through his match against Tsz Fung Yip with ease at the PSA World Championships ©PSA

France’s Gregory Gaultier and Egypt’s Nour El Sherbini came through in straight games in their opening matches of the 2017 AJ Bell Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Championships in Manchester.

World number one Gaultier defeated Hong Kong’s Tsz Fung Yip with ease inside 35 minutes at the National Squash Centre.

The 24-year-old Fung Yip could not handle the Frenchman’s firepower as he was forced to move around the court tirelessly in the first game.

This meant he struggled to build up momentum, eventually losing the game 11-5.

Fung Yip did show signs of life in the second game but, once again, 2015 champion Gaultier proved too much for him, taking the game 11-6.

The world number 32 was clearly tired by the final game meaning several unforced errors gifted Gaultier an 11-5 victory to seal the match.

"I'm happy to get the win in three today and get through to the next round," said Gaultier.

"I felt like I was moving better than yesterday and I was seeing the ball better and finding my range better, so I’m happy.

"I just need to keep improving that level tomorrow,"

The Frenchman and tournament favourite is now due to face England’s Declan James for a place in the third round.

After being forced to come back from two games down in his match against Mexico’s Cesar Salazar, it will be interesting to see how James copes in his match against the world number one.

The women’s draw saw El Sherbini get her campaign off to the perfect start as she defeated Australia’s Donna Urquhart in straight games.

This was the second time the pair had met in a matter of weeks following their second round match at the Hong Kong Open in November.

El Sherbini did not have it all her own way on this occasion and at one point found herself on level terms with the Australian with the score reading 5-5 at one point in the first set, but the Egyptian then recovered to take the game 11-8.

The second game was another close affair with long rallies throughout but it was El Sherbini again who came out on top by a score of 11-5.

The pressure of having to stay in the third game seemed to get to Australia’s Urquhart, which allowed the Egyptian to take the game, and the match, with an 11-5 victory.

After her win, El Sherbini said she had to adjust her plans after their pair’s meeting in Hong Kong.

"It is quite hard to play someone twice in the same month because you need to change your plan," she said.

"I’m sure she was coming knowing what I was going to do and I knew what she was going to do, so it’s hard to change your game plan but I’m really happy with the way I played.

"The last two games, I felt I was getting better game by game and I’m just happy to be through in three.

"Winning in three lets you save some energy.

"I’m feeling good and looking forward to this week and hopefully, it will be a good tournament.

"I'’m just trying to focus on my game and my squash more and not put any pressure on myself and try to enjoy the game.

"I’m going to do my best and whatever happens, it’s not the end of the world."

Elsewhere, El Sherbini’s compatriot Nouran Gohar also came through in straight games as she defeated fellow Egyptian Mariam Metwally 11-4, 11-5, 11-9.
