Erick Gordillo secured their first title of the evening at the Michele Richardson Olympic Swimming Pool Complex, during the third full day of the Games in Nicaragua.

He finished the men's 200 metres backstroke in a time of 2min 6.46sec, with Panama's Hernan Gonzalez following in 2:10.36.

The podium was completed by home favourite Eisner Barberena, who clocked 2:11.84.

Gordillo now boasts four gold medals at the Games, which was later matched by his compatriot Luis Martínez, after he won the men's 100m butterfly event.

The Guatemalan swimmer finished in a time of 52.47, breaking a 20-year old Games record of 55.57.

Bryan Álvarez from Costa Rica was second in 55.32, while Panama's Edgar Crespo earned the bronze in 56.14.

Costa Rica's Helena Moreno won the women's 1,500m freestyle event in a Central American record of 17:08.15.

The podium was completed by Honduras' Michelle Ramírez and Alicia Mancilla of Guatemala.

Guatemala emerged as the winners of the women's 400m medley competition, with their team ending in a winning time of 4:23.54.

Their success was not limited to the swimming pool, as Francisco Yanes won the men's sabre fencing event, as he beat Oscar Anaya of El Salvador in the final.

Bronze medals were awarded to El Salvador's Daniel Naranjo and Gustavo Cuellar.

Panama's Alessandra Aicardi beat Costa Rica’s Daniela Jurado 15-12 in the women's epee final.

Nicaragua's Mareling Gutiérrez and Costa Rica's Katrina Dyner won bronze medals.

Competition will continue tomorrow at the event, which is open to the seven countries of Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

Around 3,500 athletes are participating at the Games, which will run until December 17.
