France and Australia earned victories as the International Federation for Intellectual Impairment Sport (Inas) World Basketball Championships came to a close in Italy.

The two nations were drawn against each other in the semi-finals of the men’s 5x5 competition at the Palagarassini Stadium in Loano.

France came through the encounter, the round robin stage winners overcoming Australia 79-49.

It set up a gold medal match against Portugal, 54-45 winners against Poland in the second semi-final.

Portugal were unable to replicate their performance in the final as the French team emerged 66-31 winners.

BThe bronze medal was earned by Australia as they saw off the challenge of Poland 88-52.

Australia also celebrated victory in the women’s competition played in a 3x3 format.

Both Australia’s squads made the final of the three team event, having finished above France in the group stage.

Australia Gold secured victory at the tournament, courtesy of a 17-7 win over the Australia Green team.

France claimed the bronze medal.
