Espen Andersen of Norway secured his maiden International Ski Federation Nordic Combined World Cup victory as he battled through tough conditions to take gold at the season-opening event in Ruka.

The 24-year-old led home a Norwegian one-two as he was 7.7sec quicker than team-mate Jan Schmid, who had to settle for silver.

Akito Watabe of Japan, who was third on the overall standings during the 2016 to 2017 season, rounded out the podium with bronze.

Andersen produced the furthest leap in the ski jumping round as he jumped 132 metres for a score of 124 points.

Australia's Mario Seidl won the round on 125.1 points following a jump of 131m.

Olympic gold medallist and defending World Cup champion Eric Frenzel of Germany struggled amid varying wind speeds and could only manage 30th place, denying him a good starting position in the five kilometres cross-country section of the race.

Seidl started the 5km in pole position, with Andersen four seconds behind in second place.

Watabe was also hot on the heels of the Austrian as he began 33 seconds adrift.

The Norwegian quickly closed the gap and he worked alongside Seidl for the first two laps.

Eventually, the pace became too fast for the Austrian, allowing Andersen to move in front.

He did not relinquish his advantage as he skied away before claiming a confident victory, while the others battled it out for the rest of the podium positions behind him.

"I am really satisfied of course," said Andersen.

"It was a windy day and I did not know how it would turn out.

"But it could not have gone any better."

The win for Andersen sees him take the lead in the mini-tour, where an overall winner will be crowned following the third and final event on Sunday (November 26).
