South Korea's Kim Jung-jun safely progressed to the quarter-finals of the men's WH 2 category with victory over China's Cheng Lianghua at the Para Badminton World Championships in Ulsan.

The defending champion overcame his Chinese opponent 21-13, 21-11 to reach the last eight of the event at the Dongchun Gymnasium.

Kim, who is aiming to secure a second consecutive title in the classification, will take on Truong Ngoc Binh of Vietnam for a place in the semi-finals on home soil.

Truong progressed by virtue of a 21-9, 21-6 triumph against Japan's Atsuya Watanabe.

Lee Sam-seop of South Korea, the top seed and reigning champion in the men's WH 1 event, joined his compatriot in progressing to the next round.

Lee was in ruthless form as he recorded a commanding 21-16, 21-6 win against Japan's Mamoru Oe.

Osamu Nagashima of Japan awaits for the South Korean in the quarter-finals after he beat Russian opponent Yuri Stepanov 21-12, 21-12.

Tarun Tarun of India swept aside Russia's Oleg Dontsov 21-13, 21-17 to continue his pursuit of a second straight title in the men's SL 4 classification.

His opponent in the quarter-finals will be Shin Kyung-hwan, who maintained the hosts' strong performance at the event by beating Van Tan Pham of Vietnam 18-21, 21-17, 21-19.

Around 270 athletes are competing over 22 medal events at the event in the South Korean city.

There will be 14 medal events in badminton at the 2020 Paralympic Games, where the sport is due to make its debut on the programme.

Action at the Championships is due to continue tomorrow.
