Junshiro Kobayashi claimed his maiden International Ski Federation Ski Jumping World Cup victory as the men’s season began in Wisla.

The Japanese jumper was impressive in the two rounds of competition in Poland, opening with a jump of 124 metres.

He was able to follow the first leap with a further second, as he touched down at 126.5m.

It saw him finish with an overall points tally of 260.5, placing him at the top of the final standings for the first time on the World Cup circuit.

The surprise result also marked the 26-year-old’s return to the podium for the first time since November 2011.

There was disappointment for Kamil Stoch in front of a home crowd, with the Polish athlete forced to settle for second place.

The reigning Olympic champion finished with a total of 258.2 points in the large hill competition.

World champion Stefan Kraft showed promising early season form, with the Austrian rounding off the podium places at the opening event.

The 24-year-old managed to score 257.7 points.

He had topped the standings in individual qualification on Friday (November 17), but was unable to repeat the feat today.

The World Cup will resume next week with a competition in Finland, with action in Ruka taking place from November 24 to 26.

Russia will host the third leg of the season, with Nizhny Tagil staging competition between December 1 and 3.
