Oman is set to stage the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) World Championships, with the event getting underway tomorrow.

Athletes have been welcomed to the competition with an Opening Ceremony today at OmanSail headquarters.

The qualification series will begin tomorrow with the qualifying series, which will continue on Tuesday (November 21).

The final series will commence the following day, as athletes seek to put themselves into medal contention.

One further day of the final series will take place, with the medal race beginning taking place on Friday (November 24).

The medal race will be contested by the top 10 kiteboarders.

Competition will take place at the Al Mouj Beach.

A total of 47 kiteboarders have currently been confirmed to be taking part in the Championships, while a further 58 could potentially participate.

Kiteboarding is an extreme sport which combines wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding and gymnastics.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed last year between the IKA, World Sailing and the Global Kitesports Association to achieve a new governance structure for the discipline.
