Slovenia's Janja Garnbret triumphed in front of a home crowd at the final International Federation of Sport Climbing Lead World Cup of the season in Kranj.

The 18-year-old was seeking to secure a ninth victory of the season, with the backing of a home crowd at the Zlato Polje Halle.

Garnbret had qualified first from the semi-finals after topping the wall, but faced a tougher challenge in the final.

She proved up to the challenge by managing a high point of 44, finishing narrowly under the peak of the wall.

It was enough to secure the gold medal, with South Korea’s Kim Jain securing the silver medal on 43.

Molly Thompson-Smith completed the podium positions on a high point of 33, which matched the height managed by Julia Chanourdie of France.

The British climber was able to celebrate a first medal on the World Cup circuit, due to her higher semi-final effort.

The men’s competition saw Jakob Schubert emerge as the winner, as he backed up his first place in the semi-finals.

The Austrian climber was the only man to reach the top of the wall, a feat which placed him on the summit of the podium.

Germany’s Alexander Megos claimed the silver medal by ending with a high point of 38 in the final.

The medal positions were completed by Russia’s Dmitri Fakirianov on 36, which prevented local climber Domen Skofic from taking bronze.

The Slovenian achieved a high of 33.
