The Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC) were involved as almost 200 women and girls attended a Women in Sport promotion event at the Wan Smolbag Theatre in Port Vila.

The event was addressed by the country's director of women's affairs, Dorosday Watson, and Women in Sport Commission members Daisie Baniala, Kathie Simons and Amelia Lawac.

Proceedings were supported by VASANOC and the national federations for basketball, netball, rugby, hockey, futsal, athletics, beach volleyball, cricket, table tennis and rowing, as well as the Australian Football League.

Clinics were run to enable women to try what are sometimes seen as "male sports" and organisers were left very pleased with the level of interest.

Facilitators on the day were Tracy Elliott and Jessica Richardson, who are involved in increasing involvement in sport by women and people with disabilities at the Vanuatu Aquatics Federation and VASANOC respectively.

They stressed that involvement in sport might be not just as an athlete, but as a coach, official, mentor or Board member.

Lin Line from Vanuatu Beach Volleyball spoke of her experiences representing the Pacific nation at international level, and encouraged the attendees to strive for excellence in their chosen sports.

The Pacific Mini Games Para-athlete and rower, Ellie Enoch, spoke of the challenges and barriers she has had to overcome in sport with a disability and gave a speech about inclusion, stating that "no matter if you are able-bodied or have special needs, everyone has the ability to be a leader in sport".

Anolyn Lulu, an Olympian, coach, athlete and mentor in table tennis, spoke of her successes both as a player and a coach - she represented her country at London 2012 and was also the flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony.

She is currently responsible for the Smash Down Barriers programme, encouraging people with disability to succeed in table tennis and she hopes to win gold at the Pacific Mini Games.
