Pilsen is set to host the 2017 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Open World Championships, with the six day event beginning tomorrow.

The city in the Czech Republic will welcome a total of 224 lifters for the event, which will be live streamed by the IPF on their website.

It is expected that 147 men will be in action throughout the Championships, along with 77 women.

Athletes will compete in the three disciplines, beginning with the squat.

They will then move on to bench press and deadlifts as they seek to secure titles.

The lightest men’s weight category will be the under-59 event, with the over 120kg competition the heaviest.

Under-66kg, 74kg, 83kg, 93kg, 105kg and 120kg divisions will also be contested by men.

The women’s competitions will begin with the under-47kg event, which will be followed by under-52kg and 57kg divisions.

Under-63kg, 72kg, 84kg and over 84kg competitions for women are also set to be held.

The IPF will also hold their General Assembly during the Championships.

“On behalf of the IPF and my colleagues from the Executive Board we welcome all of you,” said Gaston Parage, IPF President.

“One more year is now over and we made again monumental steps forward.”

The IPF state their recognition by the International University Sport Federation was a key sign of progress by the organisation this year.

Powerlifting was part of this year’s World Games in Wroclaw, Poland, while the sport is recognised by the Global Association of International Sports Federations.

The IPF are hopeful of achieving International Olympic Committee recognition in the future.
