Top seed Stephan Hansen of Denmark and reigning world champion Sebastien Peineau of France both safely progressed to the second round of the men's compound event on the opening day of the Indoor Archery World Cup in Marrakech.

Hansen, who lost out to Peineau in the World Championships final in Mexico City last month, swept aside home hope Mustapha Diany with a comprehensive 149-131 win at the Salle Couverte SYBA.

Peineau, seeded eighth, also enjoyed a straightforward progression into round two as he dispatched Alexey Bashkirev of Russia 150-139.

World number two Braden Gellenthein of the United States, the third seed, booked his place in the next round by thrashing Rachid Farahi 150-130.

Paige Pearce-Gore of the United States was the surprise leader in the qualification stage of the women's compound event with a total of 592 points.

The majority of the women's competitors received a bye into the second round, with elimination matches and finals scheduled for tomorrow.

Italian Massimiliano Mandia, the top seed in the men's recurve event, made light work of his opening opponent as he needed just two sets to get past Morocco's Moulay Driss Aridal 6-0.

The Moroccan misery continued when Mouad Elidrissi was beaten by the same scoreline by Britain's Patrick Huston.

Italy's Claudia Mandia has received a bye straight through to the quarter-finals of the women's recurve tournament, meaning the top seed will need to win two matches to reach the gold medal encounter.

The event in Marrakech, the first of the Indoor World Cup season, also offers qualification points for the final in Las Vegas in February.
