Kazakhstan’s Nikita Panassenko was among the winners as bunch races were the centre of attention on the opening night of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Track Cycling World Cup in Pruszków.

Panassenko proved the dominant force in the men’s points race at the BGŻ Arena, the 25-year-old finishing comfortably clear of rivals.

He ended with a total of 42 points in the Polish city due to host the 2019 UCI World Championships to claim the gold, aided by gaining a lap during the race, which earned him 20 points.

Greece’s Christos Volikakis secured the silver medal, having won the final sprint to gain 10 points.

It helped him finish the race with a total of 27 points, pushing him above Italy’s Liam Bertazzo, third on 21.

Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky, a gold medallist in the madison at this year’s World Championships, emerged as the winner of the women’s event.

The 21-year-old was one of three riders to gain a lap on the field, before ending on a winning total of 25 points.

Ukraine’s Ganna Solovei and France’s Coralie Demay rounded off the podium positions, ending on 23 and 22 points respectively.

There was a dramatic conclusion to the women’s 40-lap scratch race, with Britain’s Neah Evans having looked to have won the gold medal, having triumphed in the final sprint.

Evans was then relegated to fourth place, having been adjudged to have ridden on the blue band of the track during the sprint.

It gave Russia’s Mariia Averina the victory in the discipline, with home favourite Justyna Kaczkowska securing second place.

Olivija Baleišytė of Lithuania won the bronze medal. 

Competitions is due to held for men and women in team pursuit, team sprint, individual sprint, omnium, keirin and madison over the next two days.

In addition, there will be a men’s scratch and women’s individual pursuit on the schedule of the opening World Cup of the season.

The UCI has announced that the overall best-ranked riders of the individual sprint, keirin, omnium and madison at the 2017-2018 UCI Track Cycling World Cup will receive bonus prize money.

These four specialities will be raced at all five rounds of the series, and once their overall final rankings have been established, bonuses will be distributed in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Winners of the final overall ranking will receive CHF10,000 (£7,700/$10,000/€8,600), while those in second and third will be given CHF6,000 (£4,600/$6,000/€5,200) and CHF2,000 (£1,500/$2,000/€1,700) respectively.

These bonuses are in addition to the prize money already awarded to the winners of each individual round of the UCI World Cup.
