Polish city Pruszków is due to host the opening round of the 2017-2018 International Cycling Union (UCI) Track Cycling World Cup this weekend as riders begin their quest to top the overall final rankings.

The event, the first of five on the World Cup calendar, will take place at the BGŻ Arena.

The venue hosted the European Championships for junior and under-23 categories in 2008, followed by the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2009 and the Elite European Championships in 2010.

In September, Pruszków was named as the host of the 2019 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.

Made of Siberian Pine, the BGŻ Arena has permanent seating for 1,800, with the capacity for 1,500 additional seats.

Competition there will be held for men and women in team pursuit, team sprint, points race, scratch, individual sprint, omnium, keirin and madison.

In addition, women will compete in the individual pursuit.

The UCI has announced that the overall best-ranked riders of the individual sprint, keirin, omnium and madison at the 2017-2018 UCI Track Cycling World Cup will receive bonus prize money.

These four specialities will be raced at all five rounds of the series, and once their overall final rankings have been established, bonuses will be distributed in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Winners of the final overall ranking will receive CHF10,000 (£7,700/$10,000/€8,600), while those in second and third will be given CHF6,000 (£4,600/$6,000/€5,200) and CHF2,000 (£1,500/$2,000/€1,700) respectively.

These bonuses are in addition to the prize money already awarded to the winners of each individual round of the UCI World Cup.

The second round of the 2017-2018 UCI Track Cycling World Cup is due to take place at the home of British Cycling in Manchester from November 10 to 12.

Canada will host the third leg from December 1 to 3 at the Milton Velodrome, which was built for the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.

Chile’s capital city Santiago will stage the fourth event of the series a week later, with competition running from December 9 to 10 at the Parque Peñalolén velodrome.

The campaign will then draw to a close in Belarus’ capital Minsk, where action will be held from January 19 to 21, 2018.
