Lee found himself on the end of a straight games 21-14, 21-15 defeat to Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin.

Nishimoto will now meet Sai Praneeth, after the Indian player overcame Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab 21-13, 21-23, 21-19.

Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon came through the first round of the women’s draw, as she looks to back up her victory at the Denmark Open.

She was challenged in the early stages by Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi, having been forced to save a game point.

Intanon would eventually progress in straight games, having triumphed 24-22 21-16.

Her reward is a second round match with her compatriot Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

There was a test for world number one Tai Tzu Ying against China’s Chen Xiaoxin, with their match being decided over three games.

Tai would ultimately battle to victory, with the Taiwanese player winning 21-9, 19-21, 21-16.

Spain’s Carolina Marin cruised through her opening match, as she beat Japan’s Minatsu Mitani 21-17, 21-18.

The fourth seed will now face South Korea’s Jang Mi Lee.
