Malaysia claimed a narrow 3-2 victory over Pakistan as Super 4s action began at the men's Asia Hockey Cup in Dhaka today.

Following the completion of the group stage, Malaysia, South Korea, India and Pakistan all progressed to the Super 4s round.

The Malaysians got off to the perfect start in the second phase of the competition at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium but fell behind early on.

Pakistan's Muhammad Umar Bhutta opened the scoring in the first minute.

Malaysia were soon level when Razie Rahim equalised but Muhammad Yaqoob put Pakistan back in front after 19 minutes.

However, they were once again pegged back as Shahril Saabah levelled things up once more before Fitri Saari proved to be the match winner as he converted a penalty corner in the 34th minute.

“I am happy we won the three points from this match but it does not say anything about making it to the final because we have two more important matches coming up against India and South Korea," said Malaysian coach Stephen van Huizen.

"Though we didn’t get off to a good start as we conceded an early goal in the first minute, I am happy with the way the boys fought and from the start only had one thing on their mind, which was to win."

In today's second Super 4s match, India scored late to share the points with defending champions South Korea 1-1.

Jungjun Lee had given the Koreans a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute.

However, Gurjant Singh’s 59th minute goal ensured India remained in the hunt for a place in the final on Sunday (October 22).

"India are a higher-ranked team and I sat the night watching their videos and made a plan for every player, especially the forwards," said South Korea coach, Shin Seok Kyo.

"We played well defensively but one of our players got injured so we couldn’t put more pressure on our attack."

Tomorrow will see Pakistan play South Korea and Malaysia go up against India.

The competition is set to run through to October 22.
