Australia clinched the men's and women's Oceania Cup titles with victories over New Zealand on the final day of the continental tournament in Sydney.

The Australian men, nicknamed the Kookaburras, surged to a rampant 6-0 win against their opponents at the Sydney Olympic Park.

The women's final was a much closer affair as Australia emerged with a 2-0 victory to claim the Oceania Cup.

Australia and New Zealand were two of the three nations competing at the continental event, with Papua New Guinea completing the three-team field.

Australia found the net on two occasions in the first five minutes of the opening two quarters to set up a comfortable success in the final of the men's competition.

Tom Wickham and Aran Zalewski both scored twice, while Jake Whetton and Dylan Wotherspoon also got in on the act in a ruthless display from the Kookaburras.

Australia's women were made to work harder for their success as first-half goals from Jane Claxton and Kristina Bates proved enough to edge past New Zealand.

The result saw Australia crowned Oceania champions for the seventh time.

India qualified in pole position for the next round of the men's Asia Cup in Dhaka as they overcame arch-rivals Pakistan 3-1 in an eagerly-anticipated Pool A clash.

Pakistan were still able to progress from the Pool despite the defeat.

In the other match to take place today, Japan ended the tournament on a positive note by beating hosts Bangladesh by the same scoreline.

Japan had harboured slim hopes of prolonging their stay at the event but fell short, losing out on second spot in the Pool on goal difference.
