Rolland, recently voted a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), stood unopposed for the role.

The 49-year-old, a gold medallist in the coxless pair event at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, first took charge of the organisation in 2014 after succeeding Switzerland's Denis Oswald in 2013 and completed his four-year term. 

Canadian Olympic Committee head Tricia Smith, who is also an IOC member, was re-elected as vice-president.

Smith has served in the role since 2012.

It was also confirmed that Shanghai would stage the 2021 World Championships at the Congress, held following the completion of this year's event in Sarasota yesterday.

The FISA Council had recommended Shanghai as host of the Championships in four years' time and the decision was officially ratified by the Congress.

There had been no other bids for the 2021 World Rowing Championships by the deadline of May 31 this year, but Shanghai's subsequent interest in staging the event at their Water Sports Centre has been enthusiastically taken up by FISA.

Shanghai will become the first Chinese city to host FISA's flagship event.

The Shanghai venue has hosted the Asian Qualification Regatta for the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games in Athens and Beijing respectively. 

The 2018 World University Rowing Championships are also due to be be held there.

FISA also awarded the 2020 World Championships, which will involve non-Olympic events given Tokyo's staging of the Games that year, to Bled in Slovenia.

Bled will also play host to the under-23 and junior versions of the event.

The Slovenian town beat off competition from Poznan in Poland to land the hosting rights for the Championships by 94 votes to 57.

Plovdiv in Bulgaria had also submitted a bid but withdrew before the vote took place.

The Bulgarian city was then named as host of next year's Ordinary Congress.

Other major events allocated included the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships to Hong Kong and the World Rowing Masters Regatta the following year to Linz-Ottensheim in Austria.

Germany's Lenka Dienstbach-Wech was elected chairperson of the Athletes' Commission, while Patrick Rombaut was appointed Umpire Commission chairman.

Mike Tanner of Hong Kong was elected Events Commission chair.

All three will serve four-year terms and also secured spots on the FISA Executive Committee.

FISA's membership grew to 153 federations during the Congress as Cambodia and Guinea became part of the worldwide governing body.
