The Guatemala Olympic Committee (GOC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the country's Special Olympics organisation.

The agreement with Special Olympics Guatemala will see a football tournament organised for Central American and Caribbean countries next year.

Around 192 players and support personnel are expected to take part from 12 countries.

As well as hosts Guatemala, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, United States and Jamaica will be involved.

The tournament will be held to mark the 50-year anniversary of the Special Olympics movement.

Guatemala sent 21 athletes to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games last year.

The Central American nation has won only one Olympic medal in its history - a silver at London 2012.

This came courtesy of Erick Barrondo who was second in the men's 20 kilometres race walk.
