The Slovenian took the role on a temporary basis when incumbent Patrick Hickey self suspended himself from all of his sporting positions following his arrest at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

In May, it was exclusively revealed by insidethegames that Hickey - who denies a series of ticketing allegations against him - would not be returning to lead the continental body.

Kocijančič will now run unopposed to become full-time President at the EOC's General Assembly in Croatia's capital Zagreb between November 24 and 25.

Irishman Hickey is also a former leader of his country's National Olympic Committee (NOC) and will reportedly stand trial in Brazil from November 29.

The 72-year-old, who resigned from the International Olympic Committee Executive Board this month, is currently in Ireland so could give evidence via video link.

EOC elections will also be held for other positions on the ruling Executive Committee - vice president, secretary general, treasurer and members.

Sebastian Coe, the President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), cannot seek re-election as a British member after leaving his role as chairman of the British Olympic Association (BOA) to concentrate on his IAAF work.

He was replaced by Sir Hugh Robertson in November of last year but the British candidate standing is BOA chief executive Bill Sweeney.

There are 23 candidates in all for 13 members' positions. 

Two candidates are vying for the role of vice president which was held by Kocijančič until he was promoted to Acting President.

They are Niels Nygaard of Denmark and André Bolhuis of The Netherlands, both Presidents of their respective NOCs.

Italy's Raffaele Pagnozzi and Kikis Lazarides of Cyprus are both running unopposed for the respective secretary general and treasurer roles which they currently hold.
