World champion Viktor Axelsen beat Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei to the men’s singles title as action concluded today at the Badminton World Federation Japan Open.
Axelsen, seeded third, triumphed 21-14, 19-21, 21-14 over his fifth-seeded opponent at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
Defeat for Lee ended his reign as champion with the three-time Olympic and world silver medallist having come out on top in Japan’s capital last year.
The defending champion in the women’s singles competition also lost her final today as China’s He Bingjiao was defeated 21-23, 12-21 by Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain.
In the men’s doubles final, third seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia overcame Japan’s Takuto Inoue and Yuki Kaneko 21-12, 21-15.
Japan had better fortunes in the women’s doubles final with top seeds Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi beating South Korea’s Kim Ha Na and Hee Yong Kong 21-18, 21-16.
In the mixed doubles final, China’s Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping defeated Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Sayaka Hirota 21-13, 21-8.
