Amsterdam will host the ninth edition of the VISTA Conference in 2019, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced.

The decision was confirmed at the conclusion of the latest edition of the event in Toronto, which was attended by nearly 300 attendees from 41 countries and drew to a close yesterday.

Attendees discussed the theme "Opportunities and challenges in Paralympic sport science and medicine support".

It is hoped the ninth edition will prove equally well attended, with the IPC stating the conference will be held from September 4 to 7 in The Netherlands' capital city.

The IPC are set to work with the Amsterdam Institute of Sports Science (AISS) to organise the Conference, which is expected to welcome leading sports scientists, sport medicine practitioners, classifiers, coaches, athletes and sport administrators.

"We are very excited to announce that VISTA 2019 will be heading to Amsterdam, a city with a track record of hosting fantastic sports science conferences," said Peter Van de Vliet, the IPC's medical and scientific director.

"The Free University of Amsterdam and the AISS have a strong focus on research and support of able-bodied and Para-sports, including scientific support of elite Paralympic athletes and talents."

VISTA was first held in Canada during 1993, with the event aiming to provide a forum for exchange on current information, research and expertise related to Paralympic sport and the Paralympic Movement.

It is hoped the conference can provide a platform for the academic world to meet with athletes and professional experts in the field of sport for athletes with an impairment.

Discussion on the latest information, research and expertise related to the Paralympic Movement and the promotion of cross-disciplinary interaction among sport scientists, athletes, coaches, administrators and the media are viewed as key benefits.

Dr. Thomas Janssen, a professor in Rehabilitation Research of the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences at the Vrije University, has been named as the VISTA 2019 chairperson.

"We are thrilled that the IPC has put their confidence in us to host the next VISTA scientific conference," Janssen said.

"Our institutions are quite experienced in organising conferences and the location in Amsterdam will enable the participants to enjoy this city's rich culture.

"VISTA being held in The Netherlands will further strengthen our efforts to gather and disseminate scientific and practical knowledge on adaptive and Paralympic sports, from the grassroots levels all the way up to the high-performance level.

"Bringing together so many scientists and professionals from all over the world, discussing and sharing knowledge on adaptive sports will definitely inspire all of us to increase our efforts in the Paralympic Movement."

Keynote speakers, invited symposia and free communications will be featured at VISTA 2019, the IPC have stated.

The biennial IPC Paralympic Scientific Award will also be presented, with Victoria Goosey-Tolfrey, a professor at Loughborough University in Britain, recognised this year.

Her academic work has helped to optimise athletic performances in Para-athletics for more than 20 years.
