Denmark's world champion Viktor Axelsen continued his progression at the Badminton World Federation Japan Open with second round victory at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

The Dane disappointed home qualifier Kenta Nishimoto with a 21-17, 21-18 success at the Super Series event.

He has been joined in the quarter finals by South Korea's world number one and top seed Son Wan-ho, who was a 21-14, 21-18 winner over his compatriot Lee Hyun-il.

His reward is a mouthwatering clash with China's Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic champion Lin Dan.

Lin defeated another South Korean in Lee Dong-keun, 21-12, 21-17.

In the women's tournament, Japan's Nozomi Okuhara won a repeat of last month's World Championship final against Indian PV Sindhu.

Second seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, the top ranked player left after Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu-ying suffered first round defeat yesterday, came through in three against South Korea's Kim Hyo-min.

She won the clash 21-12, 18-21, 21-8.
