The foundations for the win were forged in the first quarter which France finished 27-15 in front.

They then led 55-36 at half-time as they threatened to run riot.

Greece hit back and scored 11 more points than their opponents in the final two quarters, but the damage had been done.

Power forward Joffrey Lauvergne was the star man for the French, scoring 21 points and chipping in with 11 rebounds.

Poland also claimed their first victory in Group A in Helsinki, condemning Iceland to a second defeat with a 91-61 success.

Hosts Finland suffered defeat this time as they were pipped 81-78 by a Slovenia side who are now the only country in the group to have won twice.

In Group B, played at the Menora Mivtachim Arena in Israeli city Tel Aviv, there was a second victory from two games for Germany.

They beat Georgia, who had stunned 2015 runners-up Lithuania yesterday, with a 67-57 scoreline.

The Lithuanians met the host nation and returned to winning ways with an 88-72 triumph, condemning Israel to a second defeat.

Italy bagged a second victory by beating a Ukraine side which is yet to get off the mark 78-66.

Group C saw defending champions and favourites Spain in fine form once again.

The Spanish backed up their 99-60 win over Montenegro yesterday with a second thumping win against Czech Republic.

They were far too strong and won 93-56 at Polyvalent Hall in Romanian city Cluj-Napoca.

Montenegro recovered from their loss, beating winless Hungary 72-48.

Hosts Romania lost for a second time on home soil as Croatia made it two wins from two with a 74-58 success.

In Group D at Istanbul's Ülker Sports Arena, Russia recorded their second narrow victory of the tournament.

They beat hosts Turkey 76-73 yesterday and edged Serbia 75-72 today.

Latvia recorded their first win by hammering Belgium 92-64.

Turkey also recovered from defeat by beating Britain, who have now lost twice, 84-70. 

The third matches in Group A and B will be played tomorrow.

The top four teams in each group will reach the last 16.
