Indonesia's Jonatan Christie won the men's singles event after an impressive victory over Khosit Phetpradab in the final.

Christie, the world number 22, was the favourite against the Thai opponent but had to dig deep to recover from a poor start.

He lost the first set 21-14 before winning the next to 21-8, 21-17.

Bronze medals were shared by Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam and Ihsan Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia.

Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerratanachai made amends by claiming a Thai victory in the mixed doubles.

They beat Malaysian opponents 21-15, 22-20 in a 42 minute dual.

The same two countries shared the final step of the podium as Malaysia's Chan Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See, and Thailand's Bodin Isara and Savitree Amitrapai each took bronze.

There was an all host nation final in the women's singles, meanwhile, as Goh Jin Wei defeated fellow Malaysian Sonja Cheah Su Ya 21-11, 21-10 in a one-sided encounter lasting only 31 minutes.

Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong and Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung shared bronze.

Trinh van Vinh of Vietnam was another star as he set a Games record in the under 62 kilograms weightlifting competition en route to gold at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

The 22-year-old managed an overall lift of 307 kilograms to erase the previous mark set by Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia in 2013.

Eko won silver with a total lift of 306kg 

Myanmar’s Myint Ky took bronze with 284kg.

Action will continue in the Malaysian capital with a final day of competition tomorrow.
