Ronja Steinborn and Alexander Nobis of Germany ended the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Championships in style by claiming the mixed relay title on the last day of competition at the event in Cairo.

The German duo finished on a total of 1,391 points, 10 clear of nearest rivals Haydy Morsy and Eslam Hamad of Egypt.

The Egyptian pair clinched the silver medal for the host nation with a total of 1,381.

Julie Belhamri and Valentin Belaud's superb performance in the laser run helped secure the bronze medal for France as they scored 1,370.

The victory marked the second relay success for the German team at the Championships in the Egyptian capital after Lena Schoeneborn and Annika Schleu triumphed in the women's race.

The mixed relay event was a hard-fought affair and it was only in the laser run discipline where the German team seized control on their way to eventually claiming the gold medal.

Steinborn surged away from Egypt's Morsy to create a 10-second lead, which she passed on to her team-mate.

Nobis built on the platform laid by her compatriot as he continued to hold off the challenge of Hamad, tasked with ensuring Egypt finished with at least the silver medal.

"We were very solid today and it was good to see that the track was better - the organisers worked hard on that," said Nobis.

"It was a tough day but we got the gold in the end."

The mixed relay event was praised by UIPM President Klaus Schormann, who hopes it will eventually secure a place on the Olympic programme.

"What we saw today was a great demonstration of the Mixed Relay with 20 teams and an exciting finish," he said.

"Today has shown again that the mixed relay is one of the most exciting parts of our movement, and we hope our discussions with the International Olympic Committee will come to a positive success and we will have the mixed relay as an extra medal event in the Olympic Games in future."
