Olympic gold medallist Lena Schoeneborn topped women's qualification today as the International Modern Pentathlon Union World Championships continued in Cairo.

The German Beijing 2008 champion tallied 955 points in the Egyptian capital to keep her bid for a second individual world title alive.

She won this prize on home soil in Berlin in 2015 and also boasts three relay world titles and two from the team event.

Britain's Kate French was the second-best qualifier, scoring 954, while Mexico's Mariana Arceo was third on 949.

Other big names also secured their spots in the final on Sunday (August 27) as 36 women booked their passage in all.

London 2012 champion Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania, the world gold medallist in 2013, qualified in 16th place on 923 points.

Reigning world champion Sarolta Kovacs of Hungary also advanced, finishing 19th on 926, while France's Elodie Clouvel, the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist, ended in 12th place to go through on 927 points.

Australia's reigning Olympic champion Chloe Esposito is not competing. 

The men's final will take place tomorrow.
