The European country was approved following a vote by FIL member nations during the governing body's General Assembly.

There are now 32 member nations from Europe, which makes up 54 per cent of the FIL membership.

The Luxembourg Lacrosse Federation (LLF) is run by President Pit Bingen, vice-president Scharel Kirchen and development officer Henning Schmidt.

Bingen and Kirchen launched the sport in the country in 2015 when they found each other online.

What started with just the two of them playing turned into weekly games and they founded the Luxembourg Lacrosse Club in November 2016.

After a recommendation from the Olympic Committee of Luxembourg, the pair modified their statutes and became the official national federation for lacrosse in the country. 

"Acceptance by the FIL is an important step in the development of lacrosse in Luxembourg and the neighboring region," said Bingen. 

"The LLF's focus is to help grow this sport in Central Europe and is confident that FIL membership gives the LLF the necessary boost to build a sustainable lacrosse community in Luxembourg. 

"Luxembourg, being a very small country, provides young and committed players the unique opportunity to compete internationally very quickly."

Bob DeMarco, the FIL's development officer, welcomed the new addition.

"The FIL is pleased that Luxembourg is now a member," he said.

"We would like to thank the European Lacrosse Federation for their hard work in assisting in the development of lacrosse in Luxembourg."
