Brazil beat Colombia 17-0 today as preliminary round action in Taipei 2017 football competition got under way ©CBDU

Preliminary round football matches officially got underway at the Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade today with Brazil thrashing Colombia 17-0 in the women's tournament.

The Brazilians produced the outstanding result of the day as they cruised past their South American rivals at the Chang Gung University Stadium.

Brazil scored 10 goals in first half before adding another seven in the second as they moved to the top of Group C.

Great Britain were comfortably beaten 3-1 by South Africa in the the opening match of the day in Group D at the same venue.

Hosts Chinese Taipei got off to the best possible start in Group A as they saw off Argentina 3-0 at the Fu Jen University Stadium.

They are joined at the top of the standings by South Korea, who outclassed the United States to win 3-0 at the New Taipei City Xinzhuang Stadium.

In the fifth and final game in the women's tournament today, at the Hsinchu County Second Stadium, Ireland and Mexico finished level at 0-0.

There was also four men's matches today with defending champions Italy beating the US 2-0 at the Chang Gung University Stadium in Group C.

Russia also moved onto maximum points with a narrow 3-2 win over Brazil at the Hsinchu County Second Stadium.

In Group A, Mexico upset hosts Chinese Taipei 3-0 at the Fu Jen University Stadium while Ireland, similarly to their women's team, played out a 0-0 draw after they failed to find a way past France at the New Taipei City Xinzhuang Stadium.

The opening stages of the men's and women's water polo tournament also got underway today.

Hosts Chinese Taipei were comfortably beaten in the opening match of the men’s event.

They lost 17-4 to South Korea at the Hsinchu County Natatorium.

France, Hungary and Australia all recorded comfortably wins in the men’s event at the same venue.

The French defeated Great Britain 17-5, Hungary thumped Canada 17-3 while the Australians thrashed Argentina 13-6.

There were also three women’s matches today at the Taipei Songshan Sports Center.

Russia brushed aside Great Britain 25-5 while Canada impressed in their 15-4 dismantling of New Zealand.

Hungary were also victorious as they beat Japan 17-6.

Taipei 2017 officially begins tomorrow with the Opening Ceremony, with around 12,000 people expected at Taipei Stadium.

Competition is scheduled to take place until August 30, with the Universiade set to be the biggest sporting event that Taiwan has ever hosted.
