Members of the Bid Committee and Swiss Olympic have put together the document which has been split into three sections – technical, budget and an interim report.

The technical part of the dossier looked at the design concepts for the games along with potential venues, accommodation arrangements and strategies for transport and security.

In the budget section, it is stated that organisational expenses are currently forecasted at CHF1.86 billion (£1.47 billion/$1.91 billion/€1.62 billion).

It also predicts that an income of CHF1.35 billion (£1.06 billion/$1.39 billion/€1.18 billion) would be produced from the International Olympic Committee’s contribution, ticket sales and sponsorship.

The interim report concentrates on the legacy staging the 2026 Games would leave in a number of areas in Swiss life.

"We are taking another step forward and I am delighted with how the Sion 2026 bid and Swiss Olympic teams have worked together," Jürg Stahl, Swiss Olympic President and vice-chairman of the Sion 2026 Bid Committee, said.

"An enormous amount has been achieved in the past three months. 

"The result confirms that the dossier is viable and that we have a real chance of seeing a Swiss bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games making it onto the international stage."

The dossier will be reviewed by the Swiss Federal Office of Sport while several meetings involving the city authorities in Sion, the cantons supporting the bid and the Federal Government are held to discuss implementing the plans.

Sion was nominated as the candidate city in Switzerland for the 2026 Games in March.

It will be the fourth time the city has bid for the Winter Olympics and was considered the favourite to stage the 2006 edition.

They lost out to Turin, however.

The vote at the 1999 IOC session in Seoul coincided with the Salt Lake City 2002 bribery scandal.

This had been sparked by Swiss IOC member Marc Hodler, who accused the city in the United States of using bribery to win its bid, defeating Sion in the process.

Six IOC members were eventually expelled because of the scandal.

Sion also bid for the 1976 Winter Olympics which were awarded to Denver.

The US city withdrew from hosting this edition in 1972, with Innsbruck in Austria stepping in as a replacement.

If successful, Sion will become the first Swiss host since the 1948 Games were staged in St Moritz.

Other possible bids for the 2026 Winter Olympics could come from Innsbruck, Calgary in Canada and Japanese city Sapporo.
