Hosts Russia won four gold medals on the opening day of the World Underwater Federation (CMAS) World Junior Finswimming Championships in Tomsk.

World Games champion Ekaterina Mikhaylushkina began the home success at the Aquatics Centre Zvezdniy in the Siberian city.

She won the women's 100 metres surface title in 38.79sec after winning the same event at the World Games in Polish city Wrocław last month.

Silver went to Ukraine's Yelyzaveta Vakareva in 40.96 as Margot Le Flem of France clocked 41.49 for bronze.

Russia also won the men's 100m bi-fins event thanks to Aleksey Fedkin's time of 43.02.

He beat compatriot Daniil Kolosov, timed at 43.51, with Marcin Lukowicz winning Polish bronze in 43.66.

A third Russian gold arrived as Elena Lopatina won the women's 400m surface final in 3min 18.73sec.

Ceren Yesilbas of Turkey was timed at 3:19.00 for silver and Germany's Johanna Schikora swum 3:20.27 for bronze.

The Russians rounded off the night's action by winning the mixed 4x100 bi-fins relay.

They were timed at 3:06.82 for gold, with Hungary taking silver on 3:07.83 and the Czech Republic grabbing bronze on 3:11.49.

Hungary also enjoyed a good day in Tomsk, winning two gold medals.

Anita Szabo led a one-two in the women's 100m bi-fins final, clocking 49.02 to fend off compatriot Dorothy Hamlin by the narrowest of margins.

Hamlin came home in 49.03 with France's Desbordes Joana timed at 49.13 for bronze.

Alex Mozsar doubled the Hungarian tally with 400m surface gold, in a time of 3:02.37.

Ukraine's Oleksii Zakharov finished in 3:02.63 to win a silver medal in front of Russia's bronze medallist Alexandr Khudyshkin, a finisher in 3:09.02.

Czech Republic were the only other gold medallists today as Jakub Kovarik won the men's 100m surface title in 36.68.

Gun Young Han won silver for South Korea in 36.81 as Andrey Avdushkin won Russian bronze in 37.22.
