Olympic trials for the United States ski jumping and Nordic combined teams will take place at the Utah Olympic Park on December 30 and 31.

The venue was home to competition during the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics and it will now be a pivotal place for Pyeongchang 2018 hopefuls.

Victors in both the ski jumping and Nordic combined competitions will automatically be named to the United States team for the Olympics in South Korea in February, with the remaining team members set to be confirmed in January.

Competition will begin with Nordic combined action on December 30, while men’s and women’s ski jumping will take place the following day.

The events will be covered by NBC, with the Olympic broadcaster poised to show live coverage of the ski jumping competition.

"Our sport is fortunate to continue to take advantage of legacy opportunities nearly 16 years after the 2002 Olympics in Utah," said Tiger Shaw, President and chief executive of US Ski and Snowboard.

"The Utah Olympic Park will be an amazing backdrop for our athletes in an event that will showcase our sport nationwide on NBC."

Olympians Bryan Fletcher and brother Taylor Fletcher are expected to be among the main contenders in the Nordic combined competition, which will feature a single ski jump and a 10 kilometre cross-country leg.

Kevin Bickner is tipped for success in the men's ski jump after breaking the American distance record last season, while Sarah Hendrickson will hope for back-to-back appearances at the Games having participated at Sochi 2014.

US Ski and Snowboard are working with the United States Olympic Committee and the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation to deliver the event, with further support coming from the Utah Sports Commission.

"As a key partner in the 2018 Olympic trials for ski jumping and Nordic combined, the fact that this world-class event will generate millions of dollars in economic impact and significant worldwide media exposure for Utah is terrific news for our state," said Jeff Robbins, President and chief executive of the Utah Sports Commission.

The Utah Olympic Park is a prominent venue for elite athlete training, while it also hosts programmes to bring youngsters into winter sport.

Since the Salt Lake City Olympics, the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation has played host to more than 175 national and international competitions.

A complete event and broadcast schedule is expected to be released later this year.
