Acting European Olympic Committees (EOC) President Janez Kocijančič has praised organsiers of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Hungarian city Győr.

The third day of competition at the EYOF has reportedly been generating considerable interest among spectators.

Organisers state swimming, gymnastics and judo events are the most popular amongst fans, with athletes also able to watch events.

Kocijančič has claimed the action is providing athletes with vital experience as they continue to develop towards elite level.

"The EYOF is very important in the career of Europe’s young athletes," he said.

"To be successful, they need talent, dedication and sacrifice, but they also require the psychological experience that the EYOF provides.

"All the athletes here in Győr will be able to go to major multi-sport events like the Olympic Games with this experience behind them, and with a greater understanding of the Olympic Movement.

"Many of the athletes I have spoken to this week have told me that the EYOF has taught them important new lessons in the psychology of sport.

"In the past we have seen athletes who participated in the EYOF go on to achieve Olympic medals.

"I have full confidence that the experience in Győr will help lead this year’s competitors onto the same road to success.

"Their Olympic journeys have officially started."
