Sweden and Germany each enjoyed comfortable victories today to close in on qualification from Group B at the UEFA Women's European Championships in The Netherlands.

Sweden, who had drawn their opening match with the Germany, enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 with over Russia at the De Adelaarshorst Stadium in Deventer.

Captain Lotta Schelin opened the scoring after 22 minutes before Stina Blackstenius sealed the win in the second-half.

The Scandinavian team dominated throughout against a Russian side who had already exceeded expectations after their opening victory over Italy.

The Italians are now guaranteed to be eliminated having lost two matches.

Germany, the six-time European champions, were once again pushed hard before their superiority eventually told at the Koning Willem II Stadion in Tilberg.

Josephine Henning put the favourites in front after a mistake by Italian goalkeeper Laura Giuliani.

The Italians swiftly hit back through Iliaria Mauro before a 66th minute winner from the penalty spot by Babett Peter.

Sweden will top the group if they can beat Italy in their final group match on Tuesday (July 25).

Germany will face Russia in a battle between two teams who still hold hopes of progressing.
