Andre Florschuetz, a silver medallist for Germany at the Turin 2006 Olympics, has been hired as a technology consultant for USA Luge.

The 40-year-old will now help shape the sleds due to be used by the American team for a season which includes the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

He has signed a partnership until the end of the 2019-2020 season.

"From his years in the sport, Andre brings a lot of technical experience to our programme," said Mark Grimmette, USA Luge's sports programme director.

"In a sport timed to the thousandth of a second, every detail makes a difference.

"Andre's eye and knowledge will add to our already outstanding technical programmes."

They also claimed fifth place at Vancouver 2010 and won world titles in 2001, 2005 and 2010.

His 18-year career ended after the 2010 season.

United States' top pair Matt Mortensen and Jayson Terdiman finished third in the final World Cup doubles standings last season.

They did so riding a Florschuetz-built sled.
