Eight people have died after a wall collapsed at a football stadium in Senegal’s capital Dakar.

The wall fell in the aftermath of the League Cup final between Stade de Mbour and Union Sportive Ouakam at the Demba Diop stadium.

It came after violence broke out between rival fans at the final whistle of a match which saw Mbour score in the first period of extra-time to secure a 2-1 win.

Police responded by using tear gas before an ensuing stampede led the wall to collapse as fans tried to escape the stadium.

Between 60 to 90 people were injured, according to conflicting news reports.

Mbour’s winning goal prompted angry Ouakam fans to throw projectiles, including stones, at opposition supporters who left their seats en masse.

The country has suspended all sporting and cultural events for the remainder of the month.

"All of a sudden when the wall fell, we knew exactly that some of our own had lost their lives because the wall fell directly on to people," Cheikh Maba Diop, whose friend died in the incident, told AFP news agency.

Sports Minister Matar Ba promised "strong measures so that such an event will never be repeated in Senegal".

The incident comes less than four months after an international football friendly between Senegal and Ivory Coast was abandoned due to fans invading the pitch and confronting the players at the Stade Charléty in Paris.

The African rivals were drawing 1-1 in the 88th minute when a group of fans rushed onto the pitch, with one tackling Senegal's Lamine Gassama to the ground.

Players were told by French referee Tony Chapron to return to the dressing rooms before he chose to end the fixture.

Moments before the trouble began, a group of spectators outside the ground climbed over perimeter fencing and entered the stadium.

Sadio Mane had opened the scoring for Senegal with a penalty after 68 minutes, but Gohi Cyriac levelled three minutes later.
