France’s Aurélie Muller successfully defended her women’s 10 kilometre title at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Aquatics Championships in Budapest.

The 27-year-old claimed the title for the first time at Kazan 2015 and produced an equally impressive swim to touch the finish wall in 2 hours and 13.7sec at Lake Balaton.

Muller’s victory was the perfect response at a major Championships following her disqualification at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where she was denied a silver medal.

Ecuador’s Samantha Arévalo finished as the runner-up in a time of 2:00:17, ending 0.2 seconds clear of Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil and Italy’s Arianna Bridi, who shared the bronze medal.

Synchronised swimmer Svetlana Kolesnichenko secured her second gold medal of the Championships, adding to her victory in the solo technical routine yesterday.

She triumphed with fellow Russian Alexandra Patskevich in the women’s duet technical routine, with the pair achieving a score of 95.0515.

China’s Jiang Tingting and Jiang Wenwen were second on 94.0775, with Ukraine’s Anna Voloshyna and Yelyzaveta Yakhno winning bronze by scoring 92.6482.

China were also left celebrating in the women’s synchronised 10 metre platform competition, with Ren Qian and Si Yajie storming to gold.

Ren, who won 10m platform gold at Rio 2016 and mixed 10m synchronised platform gold already in Budapest, secured a second title of the Championships.

Along with Si, the Chinese pairing achieved a total score of 352.56 points for the event.

North Korea’s Kim Mi-rae and Kim Kuk-hyang took silver on 336.48 points, with Cheong Jun Hoong and Pandelela Rinong of Malaysia rounding off the podium on 328.74.
