September 15 - A "Memorandum on Ecological and Environmental Partnership as part of the Sochi 2014 Initiative on Sustainable Development" will be signed by the Sochi 2014 partners and the Sochi City Administration at the IX International Investment Forum in the city.

The memorandum invites Sochi 2014 partners to consider improving their environmental responsibility and protection programmes, across their Olympic projects and as part of the companies’ day-to-day operations.

The Memorandum seeks to underline the importance of preserving the environment during the preparations for and hosting of the Games.

It also suggests new ecological standards which will represent a legacy for future generations.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, the President and chief executive of Sochi 2014, said: "Sustainable development and ecology are topics of great interest to the Organizing Committee and Sochi 2014 partners.

"Thus, one of the most important tasks during the construction of Olympic venues in Sochi is to protect the unique environment of the region, which is achievable thanks to the use of green standards.

"Ecological, or green, construction proposes that use of clean construction materials and renewable energy sources, regulate and reduce waste and the emission of greenhouse gases, rational use of water and energy and minimise the impact on the natural environment and landscape.”

The Memorandum is one of the steps in the realisation of the Sochi 2014 ecological strategy, Chernyshenko claimed.

In all, the ecological strategy encompasses three stages of the Olympic project realisation: the preparation for the Games, hosting of them and the post-Games period, he said.
