Defending champions United States beat Mali today to secure a quarter-final place at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Under-19 World Cup in Egypt’s capital Cairo.

The US, aiming to make it a hat-trick of triumphs at the biennial event, claimed a 117-69 win over their African opponents at the Cairo Stadium.

It sets up a last-eight encounter with Germany, who defeated New Zealand 72-65 later in the day.

Also through to the quarter-finals are Italy thanks to a dramatic 57-55 victory over Japan.

Tommaso Oxilia scored the decisive two points in the dying moments to break Japanese hearts.

It came just moments after Rui Hachimura had made a three-point shot to level the match at 55-55.

Awaiting the Italians in the last eight are Lithuania, 110-63 winners over South Korea.

Hosts Egypt suffered a 72-67 loss at the hands of Argentina, whose reward is a meeting with Spain - 70-50 victors at the expense of Iran.

The one other quarter-final pits France against Canada with the former having defeated Puerto Rico 84-66 and the latter having overcome Angola 87-65.

All the ties are scheduled to take place on Friday (July 7) following a rest day tomorrow.

They will be preceded by the ninth-to-16th place classification games between Puerto Rico and Angola, Egypt and Iran, New Zealand and Mali, and South Korea and Japan.
