Scotland’s Greg Lobban and England’s Laura Massaro have won the respective men’s and women’s Professional Squash Association (PSA) Player of the Month awards for June.

Last month, Massaro became only the second woman after Malaysia's Nicol David to capture two PSA World Series Finals titles.

It came after she beat reigning world champion Nour El Sherbini of Egypt to top honours in Dubai.

The 33-year-old qualified top of Group B after wins over David and compatriot Sarah-Jane Perry, with a defeat to El Sherbini in a best-of-three games format the only blemish on a successful opening stage for the Englishwoman

In the semi-finals, the world number four was forced to overturn two match balls against world junior champion Nouran Gohar of Egypt to earn her place in a third successive final, where she was pitted against El Sherbini once more.

The final reverted back to the usual best-of-five games format used in all other tournaments on the PSA World Tour but Massaro only needed three games to achieve an impressive victory over the world number one.

Men’s World Series Finals winner Mohamed El Shorbagy of Egypt was narrowly pipped to the Men's Player of the Month award by Lobban, who claimed his first PSA World Tour titles since his seven-month injury layoff.

A torn hamstring had kept Lobban out of action from October 2016 to May this year and after lifting the Stortford Classic crown in England shortly after his return, the 24-year-old claimed two titles in New Zealand in June.

Lobban triumphed at the NZ International Classic in Palmerston North without dropping a single game, beating India’s Mahesh Mangaonkar in the final.

He kept his impressive form going at the Invercargill Open as he felled top seed Ivan Yuen of Malaysia to capture the title.

Lobban’s run came to an end in the final of the XL Open in Auckland in New Zealand after suffering a defeat to home favourite Campbell Grayson.

His impressive month, though, saw his world ranking increase by 23 places up to 44, marking the first time he has been ranked inside the top 50 since February.
